Utley out 4-6 months for hip surgery

Our worst fears have been realized.

In a news release, the Phillies said that, after several opinions, the star second baseman will go under the knife and miss 4-6 months. This means Utley could be back for the start of the season, but he may also miss the first month…or longer.

Speculation was rampant about a hip injury that Utley may or may not have suffered during the season. After the season’s first two months, Utley’s power numbers dropped considerably, but his fielding never really seemed hampered.

Props to Ruben Amaro for already smoke screening. Remember this quote?

“There’s really not much to say about it, other than we’re monitoring it.”…”[Surgery?] Not at this time. At least at this time we don’t view it as an issue.”

Thanks, Rube.

Pedro Feliz will also have surgery, but on his back.  He should be fine for the beginning of the season.
