Playoff Predictions from the Phrontiersmen, Phriends, and Phamily

So I thought it might be fun to have a little game come playoff time, getting some of our friends and family to drop some knowledge on the blog. So while Paul and I will obviously be giving our predictions, we’ll have eight guest voices who know what ranges from F-all (my mom, for instance) about baseball to people who know quite a bit (one of my brothers, Paul’s GF, various other Friends of the Blog). Whoever wins, gets…bragging rights?

Find out which one of my parents picked the EXACT SAME bracket and World Series MVP as Paul, who is unaware that Curt Schilling hasn’t thrown a major league pitch in almost two years, who smells a repeat, who’s shelling out the love for Tacoby Bellsbury, and who had the stones to pick James Loney as World Series MVP….after the jump.

So here we go:

Name: Michael Baumann
Age: 22
Residence: Voorhees, NJ
Occupation: Graduate Student, Temple University and Journalist
Relation to the Blog: Co-author

Predictions:
NLDS: Cards over Dodgers in 3; Phillies over Rockies in 4
ALDS: Yankees over Tigers/Twins in 3; Angels over Red Sox in 5

NLCS: Cards over Phillies in 5; MVP: Albert Pujols (And yes, this is a reverse-jinx pick)
ALCS: Angels over Yankees in 6; MVP: Chone Figgins

World Series: Angels over Cardinals in 5; MVP: Kendry Morales. Did I really just pick the Angels to win it all?

Name: Paul Boye

ALDS: Yankees over Twins in 4; Red Sox over Angels in 5

NLCS: Cardinals over Phillies in 6; MVP: Chris Carpenter or Adam Wainwright
ALCS: Yankees over Red Sox in 6; MVP: Derek Jeter

World Series: Cardinals over Yankees in 7 (“I’m going 1940s”, he says); MVP: Stan Musial Matt Holliday

Disclaimer from Tim: “For the record, if I say these things will pass, they shall not pass. I was pretty sure that the Rays and Giants were going to make the playoffs circa July.”

Name: Kate White
Age: 22
Residence: Columbus, OH
Occupation: Graduate Student, Ohio State University, and Cunning Linguist
Relation to the Blog: Michael’s long-suffering girlfriend

Predictions:
NLDS: Cards over Dodgers in 4; Phillies over Rockies in 3
ALDS: Yankees over Tigers/Twins in 3; Angels over Red Sox in 4

NLCS: Phillies over Cardinals in 6; MVP: Cole Hamels (because “I like his name”…Let the record show that I predicted 2 weeks ago that she’d pick Jimmy Rollins, Cole Hamels, or  Chase Utley, becacuse she’s only ever heard of 4 baseball players: those 3 and Chipper Jones)
ALCS: Angels over Yankees in 7 (“Because I don’t like the Yankees”); MVP: Vladimir Guerrero.
Here’s a GChat conversation we had over the pick:
Kate: vladimir guerrero is a crazy name
me: you could pick him
Kate: i will
haha
me: ok
Kate: is he good?

World Series: Phillies over Angels in 7; MVP: Jayson Werth

And Kate’s terrified that people will think she’s stupid for making these picks. I don’t think so; at least she’s not the moron who picked the Angels to win the World Series.

Name: Mike Block
Age: 24
Residence: Voorhees, NJ
Occupation: Third-year Law Student, Rutgers University; assistant marching band director, Pitman High School
Relation to the Blog: Red-blooded All-American boy, sometime fantasy sports antagonist

Divisional Series:
NLDS: Phillies over Rockies in 4; Dodgers over Cardinals in 5
ALDS: Yanks over Tigers/Twins in 3; Sawx over Halos in 4

NLCS: Phillies over Dodgers in 6; MVP: Jayson Werth
ALCS: Yanks over Sawx in 6; MVP: Mariano Rivera

World Series:
Phillies over Yanks in 6; MVP: Cole Hamels

Quote from The Block: “I realize the odds are against the Phillies, given how difficult it is to repeat and their bullpen issues. I don’t even think a lot of these games will be pretty. But there’s just that X factor about this team that leads me to believe that they can get it done. Here’s to a long, exciting October (and November).”

Name: Jim Baumann
Relation to the Blog: Michael’s dad

Divisional Series:
NLDS: Cardinals over Dodgers in 4; Phillies over Rockies in 5
ALDS: Yankees over Tigers/Twins in 4; Angels over Red Sox in 5

ALCS: Yankees over Angels in 4; MVP: Mariano Rivera

World Series: Yankees over Cardinals in 5; MVP: Derek Jeter

Name: Libby Baumann
Relation to the Blog: Michael’s mom

Divisional Series:
NLDS: Cardinals over Dodgers in 4; Rockies over Phillies in 4
ALDS: Yankees over Tigers/Twins in 4; Red Sox over Angels in 4

NLCS: Cardinals over Rockies in 6; MVP: Mark DeRosa (“You realize this is not an informed opinion, right?”)
ALCS: Red Sox over Yankees in 6; MVP: Jacoby Ellsbury (“He has an intersting name”)

World Series: Red Sox over Cardinals in 6; MVP: J.D. Drew (“Although I don’t really like him”)

Name: Jeffrey Baumann
Relation to the Blog: Michael’s youngest brother

Divisional Series:
NLDS: Dodgers over Cardinals in 4; Phillies over Rockies in 4
ALDS: Yankees over Twins/Tigers in 5; Red Sox over Angels in 4

NLCS: Dodgers over Phillies in 6; MVP: Russell Martin
ALCS: Yankees over Red Sox in 5; MVP: A.J. Burnett

World Series: Dodgers over Yankees in 6; MVP: James Loney (yes, it was our youngest prognosticator with the aforementioned stones)

Name: Ashley Teatum (in the interest of full disclosure, she’s a Yankees fan)
Age: 21
Residence: Scranton, PA
Occupation: Journalist
Relation to the Blog: Paul’s girlfriend

Divisional Series:
NLDS: Dodgers over Cardinals in 4; Phillies over Rockies in 5
ALDS: Yankees over Twins in 3; Angels over Sox in 4

NLCS: Phillies over Dodgers in 5 (yeah, your Phillies are going to be tired.); MVP: Shane Victorino
ALCS: Yankees over Angels in 7 (oy); MVP: Alex Rodriguez

World Series: Yankees over Phillies in 6 (we’ll both be too tired to go 7, but it’s not going to be pretty.); MVP: Mariano Rivera

Name: Ben Maddison
Age: 22
Residence: Voorhees, NJ
Occupation: Currency disbursement engineer
Relation to the Blog: Michael and Paul’s loud, opinionated friend

Predictions:
NLDS: Dodgers over Cards in 4; Phillies over Rockies in 5
ALDS: Yankees over Twins in 3; Red Sox over Angels in 5

NLCS: Phillies over Dodgers in 6; MVP: Ryan Howard
ALCS: Sox over Yankees in 6; MVP: (and Ben breaks here to say “I have no idea who is even on the sox” and proves it by picking…) Curt Schilling

World Series: Phillies over Red Sox in 7; MVP: Brad Lidge (“for his undefeated Post Season”)

So literally everyone picked the Yankees to beat the Twins in the first round; Every team other than the Rockies got a vote to win it all, with the Yankees and Phillies tying with three votes apiece.
